Look past India’s glittering palace hotels and well-trodden chains, and you’ll find a constellation of small, heritage-driven stays where the country reveals itself more intimately. Often family-run or founded by idealistic entrepreneurs, these properties showcase the country’s diverse cultures and landscapes with depth and enthusiasm, whether through a personal temple blessing, guided walk, or lovingly prepared meal. At these addresses—most of them converted historical homes—time slows as you ease into India’s distinctive rhythms.
For travelers who like to truly immerse themselves in a place, whether that entails meeting artisans, exploring wild landscapes, or tasting regional dishes with stories behind them, these are the small hotels to seek out.

The Johri
Jaipur, Rajasthan
Step through the arched doorways of The Johri, and the clamor of Jaipur fades to a pastel calm of cusped arches, corbels, and columns. This 19th-century haveli mansion, tucked within Jaipur’s pink-colonnaded jewelry (“johri”) bazaar, has five suites arranged around a sunlit courtyard. New York-based designer Naina Shah conceived the color palette of each after a gem—ruby, pearl, gold, sapphire, and emerald—and commissioned local artisans for the hand-painted murals and furniture, including embroidered headboards. Each suite has its charms: Rooftop Moti (pearl) overlooks the Old City from its private terrace; Neelam (sapphire) has a swinging love seat perfect for taking it all in.
The 70-seat restaurant prepares plant-based dishes—such as watermelon tikka and eggplant with coconut and lemongrass—using ingredients from the doorstep market. And for quieter moments, Pukhraj lounge beckons with its murals (seemingly straight out of The Jungle Book) and laidback high chai service. There’s also a spa room for ayurvedic treatments, yoga on the roof terrace, and quick access to Jaipur highlights such as Hawa Mahal, City Palace, and the jubilant morning pujas at the Govind Dev Ji Temple.

Samode Safari Lodge
Bandhavgarh, Madhya Pradesh
Bandhavgarh National Park, one of nine big-cat sanctuaries in central Madhya Pradesh, is prime tiger country. Samode Safari Lodge’s 12 cottage suites sit in pole position on the park’s buffer zone, with views of the wildlife-rich landscape just beyond. Built in the style of a rural village, the collection of 1,500-square-foot suites is appointed with fireside bathtubs, canopied beds, and Gond tribal murals. Stone-tiled lounges are furnished with plush sofas for unwinding between safaris or spells at the pool, gym, or steam room and jacuzzi.
Dining feels like an event, especially at night when the lodge is set aglow with hundreds of lanterns. Meals—European by day, regional Indian in the evening—are served in shifting settings: poolside one moment, on the forest deck the next. Expert guides lead sorties into the national park, where tiger encounters are close to guaranteed and the supporting cast of birds and wildlife is just as riveting.

Chertala, Kerala
