On the southeast tip of the North Island, just 90 minutes from Wellington, Wharekauhau Country Estate is set on a 3,200-acre working sheep and cattle station at the foot of the Remutaka Range. Its three-bedroom villa and 16 suites overlook the untamed Palliser Bay coastline.

Designed as a family home, the lodge blends terracotta, stone, and pale wood with pops of color. The open kitchen has mint green walls and French doors that lead to exquisite manicured gardens, and the rooms are cozy with super king-size beds, heated floors and fireplaces, and plush velvet sofas.

Much of the excitement here unfolds outdoors, with opportunities for clay pigeon shooting, fishing, and archery.
