Alongside PRIOR cofounder David Prior, explore Peru’s centuries-old textile traditions through intimate, irreplicable encounters. Step inside private homes, studios, and artisan workshops across Lima, Arequipa, and Lake Titicaca to gain firsthand insight into the craftsmanship, symbolism, and cultural legacy of Andean textiles.

From an exclusive, director-led visit to the Larco Museum to workshops hosted by master weavers using intricate techniques on backstrap looms, you’ll see the vast world of Peruvian craftsmanship and its heritage through a new lens. The journey culminates at Lake Titicaca, where time with Aymara and Quechua peoples brings to life the endangered traditions that shape the identity of the Andes.

This trip begins in Lima and ends in Lake Titicaca. Please purchase your arrival and departure airfare accordingly.

Trip highlights

Threads of Peru

Explore ancient textile traditions, from families in remote regions keeping centuries-old techniques alive to modern labels working with master artisans. Meet the weavers and their environments—and take home your favorite fashion and art pieces.

Larco Museum, Privately

Step inside the 18th-century mansion-cum-museum that’s draped with bougainvillea and immerses you in the lives of Peru’s pre-Columbian peoples. On a private visit with director Ulla Holmquist Pachas, take in the textiles, art, and cultural forces that have shaped Andean civilization over millennia.

Indigenous perspectives

Engage with Aymara and Quechua cultures through conversations, guided walks, and textile traditions that remain central to daily life around Lake Titicaca. A ceremony, Pago a la Tierra, or Payment to the Earth, is guided by an Aymara spiritual leader and offers perspective on Indigenous relationships to land, ritual, and reciprocity.

Diverse culinary canon

Open your eyes to hyperlocal facets of Peruvian cuisine, from Lima’s legendary kitchens to the hearty cooking of the altiplano to the bold, chile-laced traditions of Arequipa’s picanterías (literally, spicy shops).

One-of-a-kind stays

Accommodations are central to the experience, beginning at Hotel B in Lima’s Barranco district; continuing to two-Michelin Key Cirqa in Arequipa, which is shaped by its volcanic setting; and concluding at modern Titilaka on the shores of the high-mountain lake.

Who this trip is for:

  • Those interested in Indigenous cultures and their preservation through craft
  • Those who appreciate culture-dense trips
  • Those interested in textiles and collecting clothing and design pieces
  • Those who have been to Peru’s hotspots already and want to delve deeper
  • Designers and decorators—professional, amateur, and everyone in between
  • Those interested in exploring the connection between culture and spirituality

Accommodation:

  • Hotel B: Originally the summer residence of president Augusto B. Leguía, this Belle Époque villa was built in 1914 by French architect Claude Sahut. Each room is individually designed with a thoughtful mix of vintage and period pieces, lending the space a cozy, lived-in elegance.
  • Cirqa: This 11-room boutique hotel occupies a former monastery dating back to 1540—its stone walls among the earliest built by European settlers in the region. The airy, pared-back rooms are a calm counterpoint to the lively streets and markets of Arequipa.
  • Titilaka: Set on a quieter shore of the lake, this minimalist hotel combines comfort with eco-forward design. Earth-toned suites feel in step with the surroundings and command wide lake views; the sense of remoteness prevails.

Your hosts:

  • David Prior, cofounder and CEO of PRIOR: From a young age, David’s restless imagination and curiosity about the world led him to travel the globe, seeking out and telling the remarkable stories of the people and places he encountered. Drawing on his years living on the road, David created PRIOR as a way to make a “travel magazine come to life,” with journeys and itineraries across the globe inspired by their original editorial.
