An Insider’s Safari in Zimbabwe

September 20 - October 1, 2022

11 Nights

1 /

With its vast savannas, wildlife-rich Zambezi River and roaring Victoria Falls—the world’s largest curtain of falling water—Zimbabwe offers untold amounts of adventures. This trip is a rare chance to get an insider’s take on the destination through the lens of fourth-generation Zimbabwean Alexander Mavros, who hosts an expedition through his home country. Joining him is rising-star guide Siraaj Gardiner, considered one of Africa’s next generation of top guides, who will interpret the flora, fauna and landscapes along the way. Mavros and his family, long active in wildlife conservation, will greet guests in Harare and invite them for dinner at the family homestead, which includes the studio of his brother Patrick Mavros, renowned for his sculpture and silver and gold jewelry, all sourced and handmade in Zimbabwe.

The dramatic Mana Pools National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that sits adjacent to the Zambezi River, is the site of a walking safari with legendary guide Stretch Ferreira to encounter elephant and buffalo herds from a safe distance; a canoe trip down the Zambezi will offer close encounters with hippos and crocodiles. Then it’s onto scenic Lake Kariba, where you’ll vacation like a local on a houseboat, where sundown comes with G&Ts. A helicopter ride over Victoria Falls, accompanied by a historian, is the memorable finale.

Trip highlights

Walking with Giants in Mana Pools

Legendary safari guide Stretch Ferriera stands 6'9" and has been guiding in Mana Pools National Park for 30 years. His familiarity with the wildlife, and them with him, allow for a more intimate, confident and informed experience of the resident elephant herds, leopards, and hyenas.

The Zambezi by Canoe

Canoe with Stretch Ferreira’s team to Wilderness Safaris Chikwenya, an elegant lodge with seven tents that face an open floodplain—an incredible way to experience this wild river, navigating the resident hippos with expert guides.

Lake Kariba Like a Local

Live like a local on a private houseboat floating through scenic Lake Kariba, which sits adjacent to the pristine Matusadona National Park; fish for kapenta and bream, watch elephants come to the shore to drink, and end the day with a G&T sundowner.

History and Wonder at Victoria Falls

Take high tea at the Victoria Falls Hotel, a grand dame built in 1904 by the British as a place to house workers of the Cape-to-Cairo railway with historian Clive Wakefield, who will offer context on the history of Victoria Falls, back to the time when it was a small, malaria-filled trading post called the Old Drift.

Flight of Angels

A helicopter flight over Victoria Falls is now called a Flight of Angels, named after David Livingstone’s famous words upon seeing them in 1855: “…scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight.” Start over Zambezi National Park and head over to Victoria Falls for an unparalleled close-up glimpse at one of the world’s seven natural wonders.
