Trip Description

One of our most sought after group journeys is back for it's third (and final) year.

Unofficially named by Sir Edmund Hillary, this legendary home of a prominent Sherpa family is where the explorer returned year after year. Surrounded by pine trees and cloud-piercing mountains and a world away from the Everest industry that has evolved around Base Camp, Happy House—with its fluttering prayer flags and allegorical Tibetan frescoes—is a hub for peaceful inner contemplation and intrepid exploration. Participate in morning meditations with saffron-robed monks at a nearby monastery—founded by the great-great grandfather of Happy House’s builder—and gain rare access to the Mani Rimdu festival, which colorfully marks the founding of Buddhism. A three-day expedition to Pikey Peak to view Everest and other “eight-thousanders” is orchestrated by Ang Tshering Lama, the scion of this founding family, who oversees a household that supports local families and farms.

The Happy House was unofficially named by Sir Edmund Hillary, who lived here during his annual visits to Nepal between 1974 and 2001. The fully restored house includes 2 suites and 8 deluxe rooms, one big living room with two fireplaces, library, meditation and yoga room with an in house yoga teacher, spa-sauna with massage therapist.

Trip highlights

The Eye of the Beholder

Visit the Boudhanath Stupa that towers over all with its massive mandala and famous pair of knowing eyes. For hundreds of years, the Chorten Chenpo, or “Great Stupa,” has attracted pilgrims from all over the world and been a focal point of worship and offering for Buddhists. Here, feel the powerful draw of the monument and witness its all-seeing eyes.

Peaceful Mountain Meditations

Participate in a serene morning meditation with the saffron-robed monks of Thupten Choeling Monastery—one of Tibetan Buddhism’s most sacred sites—with nighttime singing bowl therapy and talks on Buddhist philosophy throughout. With a rinpoche’s blessings for happiness and long life, this trip is designed for those who seek reinvigoration in the Buddhist tradition, high in the Himalaya.

Peak Peaks: a 3-Day Trek

A three-day hiking excursion to Pikey Peak sees the Clubhouse become truly nomadic. Traveling along ancient paths once used by the traders of Tibet and Nepal—and later, early Western mountaineers—the group will sleep in monasteries along the way to the vista. From here, 8 of the world's 14 highest peaks, the “eight-thousanders,” can be seen on a clear day, including Mount Everest (8,848m). Sunrise at the summit brings one of the world’s most extraordinary views and rarest hiking experiences known to man.

The Mani Rimdu Festival

Held in the Chiwong Monastery, the Mani Rimdu Festival is a recreation of the most vivid and legendary events of the establishment of Buddhism in Tibet. It is a festival in which the universe is realigned, illusions are destroyed, demons are conquered and the virtuous rewarded. In technicolor costume and amongst high drama, we are given rare insight into a festival that occurs for 19 days, with only the last 3 days open to outsiders.

Everest Base Camp Flyover

Take to the skies by helicopter and hover over Everest Base Camp. Weather allowing, we will land at Kala Patthar (5,640m.), with Everset in the background. The helicopter will then bring us to Kongde, where breakfast will be served. It is the closest most of us will be lucky to get to this monumental mountain and a life thrill to see it up close.
